Certified Alexander Technique Teacher

Welcome to the world of music and holistic wellness. I'm Anna Tse, a passionate piano teacher and certified Alexander Technique Teacher based in Hong Kong. I believe in the transformative power of music and the Alexander Technique, and I am dedicated to helping my students achieve their musical potential while fostering mind-body awareness and preventing injury.

Do You Recognize Yourself in These Challenges?

There is pain/fatigue in my wrists/neck/shoulders/back after practicing.

I have to "try hard" and force my way through difficult passages.

I know I am tense but not knowing how to release it.

People said I look tense or my sound is harsh, even when I feel relaxed.

I am not able to perform as well as in practice room.

I inevitably tense up when I am performing

The music has become a source of frustration and pain.

A past negative experience with a teacher or performance has left you with lasting anxiety and self-doubt.

Trust that you are trying hard enough. Sometimes, what we need is not to push harder, but to find a path that resonates with your mind & body.

Alexander Technique

The Alexander Technique is a transformative educational method that addresses the intricate relationship between thought, movement, and habit. It’s not a treatment or a set of exercises, but a way to recognize and change lifelong habits of tension that interfere with your natural, innate coordination.

Developed over a century ago by F. Matthias Alexander(1869-1955), its principles have proven relevant for anyone seeking to:

  • improve performance

  • alleviate chronic pain

  • reduce stress

  • experience greater ease in daily life activities

While the Alexander Technique benefits people from all walks of life, it's especially renowned among actors, dancers, and musicians. Its proven effectiveness is why it's integrated into the curriculum of the world's leading institutions—including The Juilliard School, The Royal College of Music, and Berklee College of Music.

From Chronic Pain to Freedom

I didn't discover the Alexander Technique out of curiosity—I found it out of desperation. I suffered from tendinitis for 2 years and spent over 40,000 HKD on medical treatments, trapped in a cycle of pain and recovery.

The Alexander Technique gave me the tools to break the cycle for good. It taught me that my injury is the inevitable result of my unconscious, harmful habits built up over a lifetime of playing.

But it did more than just heal me. It revolutionized my relationship with the piano. The same demanding passages that once caused me struggle and pain, I can now approach with a newfound sense of ease and effortlessness. I learned that true power in music doesn't come from force, but from intelligent coordination and release.

My personal liberation is why I became an AT teacher. I am a living testament to its power, and I feel a deep responsibility to share this knowledge with others.

Testimonials

“I have heard about Alexander Technique since I was studying at the University. My teachers, friends and colleagues were talking about this method of adjusting the body and mind - to relieve pain from playing in long hour rehearsals or concerts and the inevitable practice sessions for us musicians. Many of us suffer from all kinds of injuries, neck and back pain, jaw dysfunction, shoulder impingement, and performance anxiety, including myself. As a clarinetist, I suffer from years of jaw pain and shoulder tension due to long practice hours and rehearsals. I have been through the process of seeking doctors for help, taking muscle relaxants and years of adjusting my way of playing in order to get rid of this unease. Unfortunately, these solutions are to treat the symptoms but not the root cause.

With a little bit of luck I had chances to have Alexander Technique sessions with Mr. Eiji Tanimura and Ms. Anna Tse. I am amazed by the simplicity of the Alexander Technique, to my surprise I was doing simple movements such as sitting, standing, and walking during the sessions. They showed me my habitual patterns of movement and posture that cause tension and strain.

I particularly remember the practice session I had on the day after the first Alexander Technique lesson with Ms. Anna Tse. I felt very relaxed, especially with my shoulder and jaw, the tension was gone, and my body was slowly adjusting to this new way of playing the clarinet, so I started experimenting and since then my practice sessions have been getting more and more effective. By learning and knowing more about my body, I experienced more freedom in movement, making music has been more enjoyable and less constrained since I started to implement this method in my playing.

To my fellow music lovers and colleagues who have constantly suffered from all kinds of long term injuries, I would like to encourage you to learn and experience this treasure for performers, and may you regain your pleasure and ease in making music with the help of the Alexander Technique. “
